Don’t do what I did!

OK, usually I am fairly smart and guard my credit card with care. But, I fell for this ad which appears frequently on the internet and TV stations.

You’ve see it lots of times. A before and after photo of someone, often from your own area, (not really) who has lost 25 or more pounds by using Acai Berry … usually in any form. The Acai Berry is probably a great help in losing weight (although I haven’t as of yet).

The scam is the “try it free” offer.

I clicked on “try it free”, gave my credit card number for postage and off it went. Unfortunately I did not read ALL the fine print….actually there was so much that what I needed to know was not easily found. I should have clicked, clicked, clicked all the links until I found it.

I got my first bottle, and also my credit card statement…WOW! My free bottle cost me $79.95 plus four Foreign Transaction Fees! I called my credit card wanting to know what this was for…Health-Cleanse?????

The Bank of America representative was very helpful, telling me that this happens often, you have to thoroughly read those Free Offers. The acai berry free bottle, free skin cream, free ANYTHING offer a free trial of their product, but they ask for your credit card number for mailing charges. Stupid me, I typed it right in.

Somewhere in the fine print, it reads that if you cancel in 14 days, nothing happens and the free trial item is yours. You receive it shortly AFTER the 14 days have passed, and whoops, your credit card is billed, my case it was $79.95 plus Foreign Transaction Fees. And you are now on their "idiot" list and will receive bottles of acai, creams or other items every month if not more often.

I immediately called the phone number listed on my credit card statement. I had no problem canceling my “account” and asked for the agent’s name, ID number and a confirmation of cancellation number. My Bank of America representative told me to tell the agent that I wanted everything cancelled….he said that often there are other companies attached to these “free offers” and more things may arrive. He said I would not be responsible for any charges after the date I cancelled the Health-Cleanse account. Unfortunately, another bottle of pills had arrived while I was on vacation.

Just to be safe, I cancelled that BOA account and was given a new account number. Ha, I was too late, another bill from Health-Cleanse had shown up, the date was before my cancellation date....so I was stuck paying another $79.95 plus Foreign Transaction Fees.

Now I sit and wait for my next statement….and mentally call myself many unkind names for falling for the scam in the first place.
